EDUCATION NEWS

  • Candidate Cassandra Veale spoke with KQ2 ahead of the April 8 election for two school board seats and said she is running to improve equal class offerings, academics, and attendance. She also backed Proposition 2 for better facilities and teacher retention measures — urging more parent and community involvement to support the schools.  KQ2

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Southwest Buchanan County Fire District warned residents that low humidity—high winds and dry vegetation can quickly turn a small spark into a dangerous grass fire. Fire chief Andrew Johnson advised that if burning is necessary, water should be ready and burns must be kept in controlled areas.  KQ2

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • At Monday's City Council meeting, officials passed an agenda that lets businesses selling packaged liquor temporarily hire workers without a full alcohol server permit. The Codes Department will review requests to ensure public safety while easing staffing shortages.  KQ2
  • Buchanan County officials added 10 new sirens to help warn residents of tornado dangers. The sirens were installed at sites including Lake Contrary, French Bottoms near Rosecrans, Halls, Route JJ near Dekalb, the Shoppes on South 169, and the East Hills addition.  St. Joseph Post
  • Starting next month in St. Joseph, residents may burn only limbs, branches, and brush in a 55-gallon container—fires must be supervised with water nearby, occur between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m., and be at least 15 feet away from buildings; officials will cancel burning when weather conditions are unsafe.  St. Joseph Post
  • The St. Joseph Public Works & Transportation Department said it is working to complete the Casino Bridge that links Remington Nature Center and the St. Joe Frontier Casino as soon as possible — delays occurred because the contractor was spending time on other projects. Director Abe Forney acknowledged local frustration and said officials are reviewing the work to ensure the bridge is finished properly — though no official completion date has been set.  KQ2
  • Residents in St. Joseph can burn dry yard waste in April and November under strict rules that allow burning only between 8:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. using a 55-gallon container placed at least 15 feet from any building and monitored at all times—only yard waste is permitted, and violations may lead to a court summons or temporary bans due to weather.  KQ2
