COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Big Brothers Big Sisters of St. Joseph will host its annual Empower Auction at InspireU downtown from 6:00 to 10:00 p.m. on Saturday, Mar. 14 — the event will fund one-to-one mentoring programs and feature live music, auctions, and mission moments for local youth.  St. Joseph Post

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Spire will begin a three-year project to replace a decades-old steel pipe with new plastic piping in St. Joseph, a move that aims to prevent pipe corrosion and safeguard gas-powered appliances.  KQ2

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The school board voted 5-2 last week to extend Superintendent Ashly McGinnis’ contract through 2028-29. Supporters cited stable leadership and progress on the district’s plan while opponents raised issues with federal funds reimbursements and communication (concerns shared by some board members persist).  KQ2
  • United Way of Greater St. Joseph has launched the free KinderClub program to help incoming Kindergarten students get ready for the 2026-27 school year. Sessions take place at schools in Buchanan and Andrew counties during March and April (parents can register online or call 816-364-2381).  KQ2

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • MoDOT has planned roadwork in northwest Missouri starting Feb. 16, with projects like bridge replacements and traffic signal upgrades affecting key routes. The work will extend through parts of 2026 and drivers should watch for detour signs.  St. Joseph Post

SPORTS NEWS

  • Nominations for the 2026 St. Joseph Area Sports Hall of Fame class are open and will be accepted through April for candidates with strong links to Buchanan County. A selection committee will review entries and announce the class later this summer.  St. Joseph Post
  • Benton Cardinals girls basketball team moved up to third in the Missouri Basketball Coaches Association poll after wins over Lafayette and Maryville in Midland Empire Conference play — showing their rising strength in high school sports.  KQ2
