COMMUNITY NEWS

  • On Jan. 23, over 700 Evergy customers lost power in parts of northwest Missouri and northeast Kansas. Evergy said power in the area — from south of Highway 36 to Forbes — was expected to be restored by about 2 p.m.  KQ2

BUSINESS NEWS

  • The St. Joseph Chamber of Commerce will host The Launch Pad's ribbon-cutting ceremony and open house on Wednesday, Jan. 28 at 4 p.m. downtown at 801 Felix St — the tech-powered hub will offer workspaces and services to support local entrepreneurs.  St. Joseph Post

CULTURE NEWS

  • Barron Ryan, a world-renowned pianist, will perform *Songs for Lovers* at Missouri Theatre on Feb. 14 at 7:30 p.m. The event includes a complimentary wine tasting on the theatre's mezzanine level.  KQ2
  • The Albrecht Kemper Museum of Art will host a Valentine's Day event featuring a five-course meal, a specialty bar and an artist talk — an intimate experience with seating options in the cafe or gallery spaces — from 6 to 9 p.m. on Valentine's Day evening.  St. Joseph Post

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • MoDOT will close both lanes of I-29 at 6 p.m. on Feb. 7 in St. Joseph to demolish the Gene Field Road Bridge; the road will reopen 5 a.m. on Feb. 9. Detours (including exit 56B and exit 43) are in effect during the project.  KQ2

HEALTH NEWS

  • Bitter cold is expected this weekend and local health officials in St. Joseph say residents should dress in layers, avoid prolonged outdoor exposure, and seek medical help if shivering stops or if symptoms like numbness and confusion (signs of hypothermia) develop.  KQ2
  • Local animal experts advise pet owners to keep pets indoors today as wind chills drop to 22 degrees below zero with possible snow this weekend, and if pets must be outdoors, ensure shelters are insulated well (check for fresh water to prevent freezing).  St. Joseph Post

SPORTS NEWS

  • School officials from SJSD and Savannah R3 said winter sports events may be rescheduled if travel becomes unsafe — conference games will be postponed to allow makeup dates while non-conference matches might be canceled.  KQ2
