COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Construction continues at Buchanan County Fairgrounds as the old middle school now serves as an event space that recently hosted a concert (170 guests attended) while insulated walls are complete and a roof installation is planned, with additional events scheduled during this project phase.  St. Joseph Post
  • The Midland Empire Ag and Rural Lifestyle Show runs today at Civic Arena with Lockwood Engineering Services demonstrating Grain Guard 360 for bin monitoring and Amanda Craig offering free batteries with tool displays and a petting zoo — an event designed for families.  KQ2

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • St. Joseph fire officials reported 33 house fires since Jan. 1 as winter boosts home heating risks + half of these occur in December, January, and February according to the U.S. Fire Administration. They urge residents to check heating appliances and take extra caution.  KQ2

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Polished Porch Antique and Boutique Mall — owned by Ashton Burton and Erika Frieden — is set to open early March in St. Joseph to give local vendors a space for selling antiques and boutique products.  KQ2
  • The St. Joseph Chamber is urging local restaurants to sign up for Restaurant Week, running Feb. 23 through March 1. Restaurants must register by Feb. 16 on the Chamber website, pay $50 for members or $75 for non-members, and submit a $25 gift card for a giveaway.  KQ2
  • Schweetz Candy Co closed its doors Thursday morning after low sales made it unsustainable. The nostalgic store thanked loyal customers in a Facebook post while urging the community to support local small businesses.  KQ2

CULTURE NEWS

  • Hawkins Events has taken over planning for Retro Con at Civic Arena May 2-3 & TCG Mania at the Knights of Columbus building March 7-8 after a leadership change led to a former organizer's departure, ensuring the events run as planned.  KQ2

EDUCATION NEWS

  • St. Joseph School District officials are monitoring the extreme cold expected today as they decide if school closures are needed based on wind chill and other forecast factors. The district reviews weather updates, bus schedules and the needs of students who depend on school meals.  KQ2

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • St. Joseph started the Community Cares Court program today to help people charged with minor nonviolent offenses access housing, health care, and job support (a collaboration among law enforcement, the municipal court, and local providers) to reduce repeated service demands.  KQ2

HEALTH NEWS

  • Family Guidance Center and Mosaic Life Care launched Strong Beginnings in St. Joseph to help expecting and postpartum mothers recover from substance use disorders by offering counseling, education, advocacy + transportation assistance to secure prenatal care.  KQ2
