- ➤ Loes Hedge, a retired educator and long-time NAACP volunteer, was honored as the first recipient of the Triplett-Veale Service Award at the NAACP reception at the St. Francis Baptist Temple on Dec. 23. - ➤ A new coffee shop founded by Elizabeth Generaux and Maggie Johnson will open Feb. 14 at 510 Edmond St in downtown St. Joseph — the venue will serve creative coffees, teas, and unique lattes to bring the neighborhood together. KQ2

- ➤ Congressman Sam Graves has sponsored bipartisan legislation to extend college tuition help to Air National Guard members — aiming to boost recruitment by giving the 139th Airlift Wing at Rosecrans Memorial Airport in St. Joseph the same benefit as Army Guard members. St. Joseph Post
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Northwest Health Services will launch its first Mobile Mammography Bus at its clinic at 2303 Village Drive on Saturday, Feb. 7 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Women should call 913+344+9989 to schedule an appointment and bring their insurance card and photo ID. KQ2
- ➤ Community Blood Center in Saint Joseph is asking for donors as blood supplies dwindle ahead of winter. The center has a one- to two-day supply of (O-negative, O-positive, B-negative) blood and urges locals to donate now to help hospitals keep a seven-day reserve. KQ2
SPORTS NEWS
- ➤ Local boys and girls high school teams will play in the 2nd Annual Winter Basketball Showcase this Friday and Saturday at the Civic Arena. Sixteen games will be held, including Lincoln (Neb.) Christian versus Benton at 4:00 p.m. on Friday and Bennington (Neb.) against Central at 5:30 p.m. KQ2
